Don't Lose Stuff

Yep, there I go and build a entire website to ensure that sharing is both easy and safe and the one time I forget to use it.

A few months ago, I raved to a friend, relative or neighbour about the series Firefly and the movie Serenity and lent it to them. I did forget to register the loan on CYNF and now I can not remember who borrowed it.

I am sure that I will get it back one day but when. This weekend I so wanted to watch the series again. It is by far the best SciFi in years.

So be it. I've learnt my lesson - next time I will remember.

Email Blasts!

Yes, we are still here and working on additional features for CYNF.

The latest is email Blasts! for assets added. When you add an asset now your friends are notified immediately via email (if they are allowed to see the asset under normal conditions).

For example when I now add the my latest acquisition - BraveHeart DVD I got for fathers day and I add it to my assets with a distance of 2 then all my level 1 & 2 friends will get an email but not any of my level 3 friends. We think this is very cool and are looking into enhancing this further as we go forward.

Let us know what you think.

Give it a try, it makes it simple to just have a look. We think it looks good, but then we are somewhat biased.

From Wired News: Give Your DVD Player the Finger

Yep,

Those "Digital Rights" people are at it again, trying to further restrict our rights.

Users were given the right to sell and lend for non-profit purposes copyright material. Now people blaming law-breakers want to further restrict our rights in the name of good. Whose good?

Not the consumer. If it can be keyed to our fingerprints then it can be keyed to our bank balance, do you want to pay for each viewing of a DVD. I don't know about you but my kids watch movies over and over - I don't want a $100 charge for Beauty and the Beast!

Where is the balance?

Have a look at this piece in Wired

Wired News: Give Your DVD Player the Finger

Can you imagine, not being able to sell or lend your disks to friends?

CYNF Revamps Main Site

Yes, more changes, this time to the look and feel of all the main website changes.

Across the top menu we now have:

- Demo - Join Now - Clubs - Licensing - About us - FAQ

All these pages are new, following the theme that people no longer read lots of text, these are short and sweet.

The Clubs tab is designed with social clubs, guilds and other member based organisations in mind. It makes the following key points:

Want to give your Members Added Value?
CYNF is an extraordinary tool that allows your members to record, share and track their assets. We make it easy for your members to lend and borrow DVDs, Books, Games, Music, Tools, Babysitters etc.

Losing track of your club's assets?
CYNF provides all the tools to manage your organisation's assets, whether they are clubrooms, sporting equipment or power tools. Fully tracked loans to members, automatic reminders,
warranty and purchase information is all retained online.

Want create closer ties between members?
CYNF strengthens the bonds within your organisation, helping to build an even greater sense of community by creating more interaction. If you borrow a book from the library why not borrow it from a friend instead!

Need to grow Your revenue for your Club?
Earn up to 50% commission while adding true value for your members. By encouraging members to add their friends and family you can earn revenue for the entire club. Use the proceeds to buy party equipment for club functions, then share those too!

In addition, we have added a technology / licensing page, which offers the CYNF Privacy Toolkit to other organisations, such as other social networking organisations.

Privacy in Social Networks
Members of social networks and blogs are now want to be able to completely control who sees what. Who sees that photo, that journal entry, my e-mail address and many more bits of data.

Privacy in Communication Networks
Give members control over their information and calls within network and control the dispersal of presence information based upon social networking concepts using our unique technology.

Our whitepaper on this subject is now in its final draft and will be attached to the pages soon.

We will keep you posted on any other changes that we make to the site here,

Andrew

CYNF Helps Students Share

Missed your last lecture? No problem! With CYNF you can search your network for someone who has the notes. Perhaps your friend Bill knows that beautiful girl on campus you’ve been dying to meet and she just happens to be doing that same course or did it last year and doesn't mind sharing her notes with you.

Want to tell your friends that you have a past exam paper that they might want to test themselves on? Have you saved old papers that might be good references for your friend's assignments this year?

CYNF now has a special sub-category for "Papers / Exams / Notes" under the "Books" heading so you can store, search and share.

There are so many ways to use CYNF that you’ll wonder how you got along without it. And thanks to our tireless programmers CYNF basic membership remains free for everyone.

Happy sharing,

Team CYNF

Note: This function is enabled to help students share more effectively amongst themselves. Posting information about current exams is highly suspect and likely to be dealt with harshly by the schools involved. Please do not spoil this system for others.

New Help Button & Pages

Hello again,

Yes we have been busy. There is now a new help button on CYNF HQ to replace the old one. This one is a little more "visible" on the page, but hopefully not too distracting.

In addition we have re-written all 26 pop-up help pages in CYNF. These as I am sure you will agree are a great improvement over the previous ones. Here are some examples:

Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

Best regards,

Andrew

How CYNF Helps You

Have you ever lost books?
With CYNF it is no longer possible to lose track of what you have lent to whom, all loans are calendarised and e-mail reminders sent every 4 days. No embarrassing, "Your know that book I lent, well er, can I have it back, please." Let CYNF do the pestering for you.

Do you buy the same books your friend buys?
With CYNF as soon as your friend enters that book into CYNF you are notified, so that you do not replicate that purchase. Imagine what you and your family can save if you only shared books! Let alone, movies, books, games, software, tools...

Do you know what your friends have they are willing to lend?
With CYNF you and your friends list all the items that they are willing to lend. And because each person decides up front what access they give their friends there is no embarrassment in asking to borrow something. With CYNF you can also arrange reciprocal loans easily.

Do you want an excuse to catch up with friends regularly?
CYNF gives you another good reason to catch up. To share resources, be they notes, books, training tapes, software, equipment, CDs, DVDs, BBQs, Gardening Tools etc.

Do you want to make use of those items just gathering dust?
Create reciprocal obligation by listing and lending all those items that are just gathering dust. That spare monitor you are unlikely to need -- lend it to a friend, they probably have a printer or fax machine they are not using. In the process congratulate yourself on helping to improve our environment by using what we already have.

Do you want to grow your network of friends and increase your virtual library at the same time?
CYNF is flexible, it lets you grow your network and benefit from your wider social network by borrowing and lending from friends of friends.

Do you have a list of all the books, CDs, DVDs, software and games for your house and contents insurance? Do you have it valued?
I do, its literally in the palm of my hand. I have downloaded the complete list from CYNF in Microsoft Excel format and put it on my Tungsten palm device. I know that my CD collection is worth $ X and my DVDs $Y. I can e-mail that list to insurers and elsewhere. CYNF also provides an invisible flag against an item so that it is available for your valuation and listing but none of your friends can see it.

Do you have warranty details and serial numbers recorded?
I do, CYNF lets you record all details of the purchase of items. I have every serial number of the hardware and software I own, online available worldwide 24/7. I know when the warranty on my notebook expires, so I know when to make sure I get that faulty hard drive fixed.

Do you want to sell or swap items amongst your friends?
If you don't want to lend an item, you can put it on a list to sell or swap. But unlike online classifieds, this only lets your friends see this, so that you do not get those phone calls at 4am on a Sunday! Unlike eBay it is very simple, just flag the item as one you are willing to sell/swap and CYNF will reveal this to your secure network of friends.

Do you have a holiday house or something else you share with friends and relatives?
Well with CYNF you have a fully calendarised booking system, you can reserve it for the school holidays and let your relatives book on a first come first served basis.

Trust some friends and relatives differently to others?
With CYNF you do not have to trust everyone the same, with its patent pending security system you can assign people different trust levels and they get to see only what you want them to see. So if you trust your family to see everything and your colleagues at work less, that is OK and handled with ease within CYNF. CYNF provides asymmetric security -- meaning that if they trust you with everything, you do not have to trust them to the same extent. CYNF protects your privacy -- if you do not trust someone they can not see you items or your e-mail address.

Do you have a shared household? Or want to keep track of items separately?
With CYNF you can, either each person in the house can have their own account, or alternatively you can have multiple locations defined so that you can record that the asset is in the holiday house.

As you can see, CYNF is a complete secure and flexible solution for your lending and borrowing needs. Coupled with its powerful asset management tools it is the system of choice for individuals looking to improve their control and use of personal resources.
